Setting: The Earth of the Justice League universe is very similar to our, in terms of geography, government, locations and the like. It just has more explosions and aliens. Set around the early 2000s, it's easy to see the similarities between the two Earths. There are regular, everyday humans with no special powers, making up practically the entire population of Earth.
After that, things start to differ. There's costumed superheroes in large cities, saving the normal citizens from psychotic villains running amok But there are super-powered humans to save the populace from these villains. A large majority of them were born with their powers, and trained intensively to sharpen their skills (such as Black Canary, Flash, Zatanna). However, there are many superheroes who rely on their own gadgets and normal abilities, such as Batman and Green Arrow, who use their own specially designed weapons, but aside from that, are regular humans. Many different heroes make up the Justice League, each with varying abilities (it would take ages to list them all), but all of them have the same desire to protect the world and her people from whatever may come at them. And they're more than capable of handling world-threatening situations when they team up.
Naturally, though, when there are superheroes, there are also supervillains. Many common foes of the Justice League members team up to try and take down their hated enemies, such as the Injustice Gang (composed of Lex Luthor, Ultra-Humanite, Star Sapphire, Cheetah, Copperhead, Solomon Grundy, Shade, and Joker, who joined them later for a brief period of time) or Secret Society (composed of a multitude of villains, all with grudges against members of the League). Both of which were quite a challenge for the Justice League, but were naturally defeated. Good always wins, right? And most supervillains have the usual goals in mind; money, world domination, defeating their superhero foes, your normal bad guy stuff. All have their own special powers, skills, or something that makes them a large threat to the world, though they are always stopped by the Justice League. However, possibly the most fearsome enemy of the Justice League is Lex Luthor. This man is crafty and conniving beyond belief, and he always has an ace up his sleeve. He's the one that formed the first Injustice Gang, and later took over the Secret Society from Grodd, and still managed to keep all the villains in line and follow his orders. He's been one of the biggest problems for the League, despite how many times they've stopped him.
There are far more races and species in this universe than ours, as well. There are the Guardians of Oa, who created the Green Lantern Corps, of which John Stewart is a member. They give members Green Lantern rings that powers they use to fight evil and help bring peace to the universe. The Corps is made up of much more than humans, as various aliens races are a part of it, as well. There are Kryptonians, who come from the lost planet of Krypton, and the only survivors of it left are Superman and Supergirl. As they no longer have a planet to return to, they choose to stay on Earth, and use their superpowers to help the Earth. Then, there are the Martians, or Martian in this case. J'onn J'onzz is the last Martian left, as his race was defeated by the Imperium invasion many years ago, and he came to Earth to help stop the invasion coming to them. There are also the Thanagarians, who look like humans in every way except for the large wings on their backs. They're an incredibly strong race, and rather militaristic, doing whatever they can to defeat their enemes, the Gordanians. The Atlantians, who Aquaman is the leader of, are a race of aquatic people living under the sea. They haven't had good communications with the surface people, until Aquaman chose to repair them. They are a proud and strong race, able to breathe on both the land and in the water, and are able to communicate with aquatic life. The Amazonians reside on Earth, as well, living on an island known as Themyscrira, which is made entirely of women created by the Greek gods and trained since birth to fight as warriors. They were given gifts from the gods, such as immortality and great strength.
Another large difference between the worlds is the existence of magic. It's not all sleight of hand and trick mirrors there, they have honest to god magicians who fight along side the League. Known magicians in the League are Doctor Fate and Zatanna, the latter of whom is actually a famous magician in their world. By speaking backwords, she can perform various magic acts, including those for attacking, defending, or even regular magic tricks for her show. Doctor Fate, however, is a much more powerful magician, because of the powers of the Helmet of Fate. The existence of magic never seems to be questioned, and most normal citizens just see it as a very elaborate magic show, unless said magic is performed in battle. Magic helped the League on many occasions, such as stopping Ichthultu, a bloodthirsty god who fed on souls, or when he needed to switch back the minds of Flash and Lex Luthor. Magic has been proven very effective against Kryptonians, but its only known weakness it Nth metal, as Shayera was able to defeat Doctor Fate.
The Justice League wasn't always around. The founding members of the League (Superman, Batman, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern John Stewart, Flash, Wonder Woman, and J'onn J'onzz) hadn't even interacted much until an alien invasion threatened the very existence of mankind. J'onn had been kidnapped by military forces, and telepathically had Superman come to his aide, to tell others of the white alien invaders. They had wiped out his entire race, the Martians, hundreds of years ago. To prevent the same thing from happening on Earth, J'onn sent out a telepathic distress call to John Stewart, Hawkgirl, Flash, and Wonder Woman. It was a very long and arduous battle, and most of the heroes had been captured at one point. But they managed to free themselves from the aliens, and soon went on to destroy all the ships that had landed on Earth. Superman then asked all of them to join together to form a team of superheroes known as the Justice League. They even had their own headquarters known as the Watchtower, an orbiting satellite they could use to keep an eye on things in the world. All of them agreed, except for Batman, who said they can call him when they require his help. And thus, Earth had a new team of superheroes to defend it from whatever may come at them.
In this world, one of the most striking differences is the ability for people to travel back and forth in time. One of the major events that happened was the immortal villain, Vandal Savage, went back in time to give his younger self advanced technology during World War II. The entire League (sans Batman) saw the entire world changed in their present time, in the blink of an eye. A ruthless man named Vandal Savage had somehow become the dictator of the entire world. The League themselves managed to go back in time, as well, and rewrite history the way it was supposed to be written. Of course, this doesn't mean they stopped Savage for good, he does come back.
Possibly one of the most major events for the world is the Thanagarian invasion. They arrived on Earth after stopping an attack by a Gordanian battleship, telling them of the coming invasion. It was also revealed that Shayera was a spy sent ahead as an advance scout to prepare for the Thanagarian arrival. They claimed to want to help, but it was soon proven the generator they were building would destroy the entire Earth just so the Thangarians could win their war. After being defeated and leaving a bad taste in the citizens' mouths due to having a dictator ship, the Thangarians left Earth.
Sometime passed between after the invasion, and the Justice League had grown exponentially in size. They built a new Watchtower, this time allowing normal citizens to come aboard and work to help operate it, which showed the League had opened up more in a way to the people. But with the League growing in size and popularity, there are naturally going to be more people against them.
One of the groups against the Justice League just happened to be the United States government, who began funding a secret division to counter the League, should they ever go rogue. Cadmus is basically a poster project for "Things You Should Not Do". This includes, but is not limited to making clones (one of Supergirl, and a team of clones called the Ultimen, with many copies of them as backup), serums, and splice DNA at will, let Lex Luthor join your board, or think up counterattacks to handle the Justice League's super-powered members. It ends with your clones being defeated and/or not following orders, Luthor playing all of you since you shook hands, and the League still coming out on top. Of course, all of this stays under the radar as Cadmus is a secret government division made specifically for countering the Justice League. They know the League will protect them, but they don't know what will protect them from the League if they ever decide to go rogue. Luthor helps fund Project Cadmus, as well, but that only aided him in his secret agenda, which involved pitting Cadmus and the League against each other. He was very successful after blasting an abandoned Cadmus building with the League's own weapon. This caused the people to lose a lot of faith in the League, and Cadmus launched a counterattack, thinking it an act of revenge. Batman was able to get Amanda Waller, head of Cadmus, to see that Luthor was playing them all. Once the League won the battle, Waller proclaimed that she put her faith in the Justice League, and disbanded Cadmus.
Personality: At a first glance, Shayera appears to be a strong-minded woman with one hell of a temper. And they'd be right. Shayera isn't usually the easiest person to get along with, and can come off as brash, or even rude at times. She outright demands answers from many people, even though in authoritative positions, which she doesn't seem to give much care for. Such as with Queen Mera, demanding to know why a sea monster attacked a cruise ship, or why Doctor Fate knew Thanagarian runes. In many instances, she doesn't get along with people right off the bat. It takes her a while to warm up to them to become friendlier around them, like with the founding members of the Justice League. She considers them to be her good friends, but her social life doesn't really have anyone else in it besides them. However, this doesn't mean they don't get her everyday attitude, such as telling John to go back and try his training again, or she'll knock him into next Tuesday. Shayera's common battle plan is going in headfirst and hit it with all you've got, as we see repeatedly through the series. Shayera is an incredibly spirited person, and it's extremely difficult to get her down. She's strong on multiple levels, and won't go down even in the most grim of situations. She even sassed what was considered the being who gave her people reason and order, saying she had nothing to say, but a gesture to give him if her hands weren't tied. Yes, she was going to flip off what was considered a god.
Shayera does genuinely care for people close to her, despite appearing very sassy and abrupt with the League. Even though she appears uncaring at times, she wants to help keep the earth safe. This desire was strengthened after she almost helped destroy the world, even if she had no idea of what the Thanagarians were truly planning. She was viewed as a traitor all around, by Thanagar (who exiled her), and by Earth, the people of whom she almost doomed. But she hadn't counted on coming to care so much for Earth and her people, who accepted her, gave her a place to call home for the time being, friends to surround herself with, and people who cared for her in return. She wasn't upset at any of the hate she got by her actions, she thought she deserved the anger they threw at her. Shayera deeply regrets her actions against Earth, and actually fell out of the hero business altogether for a while after leaving the Justice League, apologizing to her lover, John Stewart and declaring her love for him was never a lie.
Shayera was even able to make friends with an enemy, Solomon Grundy, as they needed him for a mission against an ancient evil. During a battle, they wound up growing close to one another, and he even gave her a nickname. When he passed, she greatly mourned his loss, and even gave him the peace of mind that his soul will be waiting for him on the other side. His revival is ultimately what brings her back into the fray, determined to try and help her friend from anymore pain and suffering. She even tries to reason with him as he rampages through the city, for once not using her regular tactic of going in headfirst and hitting hard. Once it's clear she must kill him again, she does the deed with much sorrow and pain in her heart. Even if they only worked together for a short time, he left a great impression on her the first time and truly making her care for him. Though she believed her destiny was to always hurt those dear to her, the lady and child she had saved early gave her their thanks, and John Stewart told her it wasn't so. They even told her she could join back up with the League at any time, saying everyone deserves a second chance. This meant a lot to Shayera, giving her hope that she wasn't always a traitor, and that there were people who needed her out there.
After rejoining the Justice League, there were still a few issues Shayera had to deal with. One of them was teamwork, as she often went solo on missions rather than take a few other members along. J'onn had to force her to take Vigilante and Vixen on a mission with her, neither of them she got along well with as their leader, or fellow League member. Vigilante downright disliked her after the Thanagarian invasion, as he was captured and imprisoned by "filthy hawks" such as Shayera. She doesn't show any disdain in return to this comment, accepting it like she did all the others. But that's not the worst of it. When she learns that her ex-fiance, Kro Talak, was killed after an attack on the Gordanians, she guilt rises up more than before, later stating she has feelings for a lot of the people she let down. Thankfully, Shayera covert-ops training allows them to escape and remain hidden for some time. She even chooses to surrender herself to the Thangarians attacking them on their mission, to let her get what's coming to her. The others object to her choices, but she ultimately does give herself up in exchange for the life of her teammate, Vixen, who was captured. Once back at the Watchtower, Shayera and Vixen wind up becoming fast friends, sharing a drink and laughing about John Stewart's quirks, as both of them dated him. Shayera admits she still loves him, and the two agree to a competition to see who can win his heart. This does not, however, stop them from being friends.
Regarding her arrival on the turtle, Shayera will be a mix of distressed and furious. She's been teleported to other worlds enough times that it gets to be a pain for her when she's not asked. One course of action for her is going to be trying to find a way out, whether it means asking locals, or trying to fight her way out. Though she'll have a hard time believing she's stuck in between life, dreaming, and death, Shayera won't rule out the possibility. She's seen more than enough of the universe to think it possible, but that doesn't mean she'll adjust well. Shayera would be constantly trying to find a way back to her world, since things are going well for her despite all of the events she's had to go through. She has a life she wants to return to, and people on Earth who need protection, and she wants to do her job there.
Appearance: Shayera looks basically like any other human, except for the large hawk-like wings on her back. Said wings are a brownish-grey color, and their height is about an inch or two less than hers. Shayera stands at somewhere between 5'7" - 5'8", with red hair that goes down past her shoulders, and green eyes. Her body is lightly tanned, and despite looking thin, she is very fit and has toned muscles.
Abilities: Being Thangarian, she has large wings on her back perfect for flight. Thanks to these wings, she has a large advantage in battle, being able to simply fly out of range of attacks, as well as being able to hit from above. Her strength is much greater than a regular human's, as well as her endurance and durability, thus letting her survive much longer in a battle than average people.
Shayera was a lieutenant in the Thanagarian military, as well as an instructor in espionage, so she has a wide array of skills. Her combat skills are off the charts, as she was able to defeat four members of the Green Lantern Corps in hand to hand. No weapons required in that fight, she wiped the floor with them using only her martial art skills.
Though she doesn't always need a weapon to beat up someone, she's incredibly skilled at using her Nth metal mace. When she's wielding it in battle, Shayera is quite the force to be reckoned with. Her mace is able to do considerable damage to an opponent, and as it's made of Nth metal, it can nullify magic directed at her.
Even though Shayera tends to take the violent road in a fight, she's not without intelligence. She's been able to beat Batman at chess before. Her training with tactics and military science has added to her intelligence, making her a very capable person to plan strategies, battle plans, and the like.
Suitability: Shayera is more than appropriate for this setting considering she was a lieutenant in the Thanagarian army for over five years. She's also dealt with many life-threatening situations on Earth (and other planets), and handled many militaristic battles with ease. She'll adapt quite easily, and take it all in stride. For her, it'll be just like her time in the military.
Inventory: clothes and her nth metal mace
Suite: her previous suite, EA-2C would be great, if it's still available. if not, another two story suite in the Earth sector would be fine.
In-Character Samples:
Third Person: It all felt like his happened as a blur, same as the first time. The only difference was the familiarity. She remembers flipping off the Emperor for bringing her back, attendants (reluctantly) helping despite her usual gruff and overall rude manner. Shayera practically ran out of the palace, choosing to give the city a once over before visiting any of her friends. And Dick. Dick was. Something. A really special something that just clicked, like it did with John. But now wasn't the time to be a love-struck school girl. It was time to take a flight over the city and get her bearings straight, as well as her thoughts.
Why was she brought back? Did they decide one second she wasn't needed, but the next she was? Was it just random selection again, and Shayera just so happened to be dragged back here? Then again, "dragged" may be a strong word since, despite popular belief, Shayera thought this place was okay with her sometimes. Asti herself was wonderful, and she did make quite a few good friends. Hell, she even got a family, with one stupidly optimistic little brother. Kyle is on the top of her list for people to visit once she gets things in order.
Despite the warm memories she has when thinking of people she's met here, there's always the darkness to go with the light. And that was that Shayera didn't want to be forced back here. Taken out of her life yet again to fight in a war she still wasn't sure on. If they had bothered to find a way of asking the League itself for help instead of plucking out members of varying universes, life here would be much smoother. Instead, there's the constant feeling of not belonging with people she knows, but still doesn't know.
Frankly, all of this was giving her a headache. She lands by a simple cafe, grumbling to herself about how there should be rules of inter-dimensional travel set up somewhere. Ordering a quick coffee (black with three sugars), grabbing a seat, she rubs her temples tiredly. Nothing would please her more than to blast a few baddies into next Sunday, but right now, the most logical thing to do would be go around to familiar faces. See what's changed. Get a feel for the turtle. Things are certainly different now, whether she likes it or not.
Network: (It's all familiar. The streets, the scents, even the breeze. It took her no time at all to get settled in. Mere seconds to get to her apartment, making herself more than comfortable on the couch as she starts up the console. If people couldn't tell earlier by the giant flying human overhead that Shayera was back? Her smirk as she starts a video certainly.) Well, I hoped nobody missed me too much. Was I even gone for that long? At least you didn't trash the place, I would've been hurt you didn't invite me.
(Okay, so she's mostly kidding on the last part and it's pretty obvious by the grin, and that mischievous look in her eyes.) So far, it doesn't look like too much has changed. But who wants to be the lucky person to bring me up to speed on what I've missed? Can't be too much weirder than going to back to what you were doing for three seconds, forgetting everything here, then coming back in like a ping pong ball. (She. Might be a little miffed at that. Wrinkles of frustration reaching the corners of her eyes. Mixed feelings in general.) But hey, guess it's not too bad to see some familiar faces again.
